Sugar Act of 1764
The Sugar Act replaces the old Molasses Act which was not strictly enforced because it was 6 pence per gallon, too high for colonists. · Date: April 5, 1764 · Effect: 3 pence per gallon of molasses tax · Purpose: to help Britain offset the charges from war · Not only sugar but wine, coffee, etc. · Backed by strict British Navy *Information is from Ms. Vargus's Class Notes* "If taxes are laid upon us in any shape without ever having a legal representation where they are laid, are we not reduced from the character of free subjects to the miserable state of tributary slaves?" |
